When Technology and the Self Storage Industry Meet Good Things Tend to Happen

It is a little old a very much a tired cliché, but more and more each day it is true—computers are our friends. Most of us probably curse our laptops, cell phones, and tablets at least once a day, but can we honestly imagine life without them? Probably not, and as much as modern technology has become engrained in our personal lives the same could be said for most businesses—self storage and otherwise.

On the outside it does not seem as if the self storage industry would be benefit as much as other industries from technology, but that is far from the truth. From management software to security to marketing technology is just as big a boon to self storage facilities as other businesses.

For example, in this day and age most of us use the yellow pages to prop up the corner of a table; not for finding phone numbers and addresses. That’s what the internet is for! Since there are all sorts of hand held devices that are internet accessible the World Wide Web demands a solid online persona for self storage facilities; one that tells people all they could ever want to know about your business and most of all how to become a customer.

Recently Extra Space Storage, one of the nation’s leading self storage companies, was recognized by the Online Testing Awards for its website and awarded the Gold Ribbon.

“Many companies are just beginning to recognize the need for robust, sophisticated testing, but Extra Space Storage has invested in it for many years,” said Emily Emmer, optimization marketing manager at Extra Space Storage. “Although we understand the financial impact and hear from customers about how easy we’ve made the process of renting storage, it’s really validating to receive industry recognition for our testing and optimization work.”

Smart operators know when to make use of modern technology to make their lives and the lives of their tenants better. They don’t just know when to use it, but what kind to use. For example, many of the 2013 Facility of the Year Award winners from around the world use SiteLink’s self storage software to help manage their facilities.

“We chose SiteLink because it works with our local settings, time zones, tax systems and laws,” said Arie Rezepka, AKIKB Minibodegas’ owner. “It’s an excellent tool for running our operation. The Spanish version and the Spanish-speaking technicians at SiteLink have been invaluable. Their support at any time has been great.”
