A UK storage facility, BiG Storage, has received two industry awards at the annual conference of the European self storage industry. The conference, which included representatives from the U.S. Self Storage Association, the U.K. Self Storage Association, and the Federation of European Self Storage Associations (FEDESSA), took place from June 16 to 17 in Berlin. BiG Storage received the Support to the Community 2010 and the UK Facility of the Year awards.
BiG Storage was recognized because it takes on community-related projects frequently — more than 20 times just in the last 18 months. For example, over the holidays BiG Storage started a Christmas Toy Appeal, which resulted in the donation of 10,000 toys to local hospitals and other children’s charities. BiG also sponsored the Cheshire Jets basketball team, which included sponsoring a campaign to teach children about healthy diets and lifestyles. Andrew Donaldson, the founder of BiG Storage, also helped to organize a charity ball that raised 250,000 for the Prince’s Trust. The Prince’s Trust is an organization that helps to provide training and business loans to young people who have finished their education.
In a statement released today and published in the Chester Chronicle, Donaldson commented, “Our biggest community-based project currently is Rhino Mania for which we are presenting partners. I love Rhino Mania – we’ve had so much fun and it’s not even on the streets yet!” He continued, “Not only will the project raise funds for one of our favourite charities, the Hospice of the Good Shepherd, but we’ve purchased and donated a rhino, BiG Deva, to Chester FC and hope to raise thousands of pounds for the new community club, and not only that, we’re opening a zoo of over a dozen animals on our front lawn at Sealand Road. Over the last few weeks with 70 large rhinos, 120 mini rhinos, and the zoo animals, I’ve begun to wonder whether we run a self-storage facility, a zoo or a mad house – did I mention the 14 foot high giants and the mad women in the loft!”
The conference included speakers from other self storage associations around the world. Anne Ballard (“The Hat Lady”), from Universal Management Company, came from the U.S. to speak at the conference. Ballard is a fixture at self storage association conferences and seminars in the U.S. Jonathan Perris came from the Self Storage Association Australasia, and spoke about growth in world self storage markets.
