Almost every time you turn around, there is something in the news about social media – and Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are some of the big daddies on the playing field.

Facebook was founded in 2004 with over 1 billion users as of October 2012. YouTube was founded in 2005 and roughly 60 hours of video is uploaded to the site every single minute. Twitter was created in 2006 and has over 500 million registered users as of 2012. Many companies use these sites in their marketing campaigns.

Like many companies in the self storage industry, USSelfStorageLocator.com uses Twitter in its social media marketing efforts. They have had impressive growth in their Twitter followers in the last three weeks. They have had a twenty-five percent increase.

“We are inspired by the significant increase in followers we have received, in such a short time,” says Victor Dante, CEO.

There is one easy thing that self storage facilities can do to increase their Twitter followers. That is to use hashtags. A hashtag is the pound (#) symbol.

Words in a tweet become a “keyword” when the # is placed in front of it (without a space). Those keywords help people when they are searching for information on a wide variety of topics. Popular hashtags for the self storage industry include:

  • #SelfStorage
  • #Storage
  • #Unit
  • #Moving
  • #local
  • #Relocation
  • #(name of city)
  • #(name of facility)

Twitter users can type a keyword in Twitter’s search box. The search will bring up any message that has that specific keyword in it. So, self storage marketers will want to be sure to use the common self storage hashtags in their tweets. (A best practice is to use no more than two keywords per tweet.)

I’m wondering if the ‘bluebird’ that Twitter uses is based on the “bluebird of happiness” which was a popular American song of 1934 and also alluded to in the song “Somewhere over the Rainbow in the Wizard of Oz? Regardless, Twitter’s bluebird is spreading lots of joy to the folks at USSelfStorageLocator.com because of the increase of followers.

USSelfStorageLocator.com is an online self storage comparison shopping site. Consumers are able to locate, compare and reserve a self storage unit or vehicle storage online or by a live call center, anywhere at anytime.
