There are Milestones of All Kinds in the Self Storage Industry

Milestones are important. They give people something to measure off of. They give people a target or goal to shoot for, and in many cases without one it can be real easy to become complacent and lazy. If you do that in a business—like the self storage industry—you risk doing the one thing that you don’t want to do.

Fail.

Setting milestones can be something simple or they can be as detailed as you want them to be. They don’t even have to be something typical, but could be something unique. For example, take the recent goal set by PhoneSmart.

The company’s purpose is to take reservations for any of 100 clients and over 800 properties. It started out in the fall of 2000 taking reservations for its parent company, StorageMart, but in time branched out to include others.

Back in October 2012 the company reached a major milestone—it’s one millionth reservation!

“When we wrote our first lead reservation in December of 2000 we had no idea we’d end up writing another million of them,” said PhoneSmart spokesperson Tron Jordheim. “What a thrill.”

PhoneSmart recently marked a different, more unique goal—it took reservation 1,234,567!

Milestones can come in all shapes and sizes; some unique like PhoneSmart’s and others more typical. For example, there is one that every company likes to celebrate—another year in business. Westy Self Storage understands that and celebrated its 15th year in business last year.

“We are pleased to be a part of the Elmsford community,” said Tim Mincin, district director of Westy Self Storage, Elmsford. “Our tenure has allowed us to truly get to know our neighbors and give something back to the community.”

Charities like to mark milestones as well. Kure It has been raising money to help fund further research in the fight against cancer, and is often the recipient of fund drives by self storage facilities across the country. When Kure It received a check from one it was able to meet a pretty goal—the $2 million

“We are pleased to be a part of the Elmsford community,” said Tim Mincin, district director of Westy Self Storage, Elmsford. “Our tenure has allowed us to truly get to know our neighbors and give something back to the community.”

It would be easy to let all of these milestones go and just keep doing business as usual. By recognizing them it gives them the chance to be celebrated—and there is nothing wrong with that!
