Sometimes something happens that lets us know just how tenuous and fragile life can be. We express our deepest sympathies to the family of Robert Bret, the Executive Director of the Florida Self Storage Association. He passed away suddenly on June 7 while vacationing with his family in Jamaica. He was 40 years old. He is survived by his 13-year old daughter, his mother, sister, brother-in-law, nephew, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Bret served as the executive director for three years for the Florida Self Storage Association (FSSA). During his career, he developed training programs and materials for thousands of internal and external employees in the self storage industry. He was an effective administrator and a strong advocate for the FSSA.
Memorial services were held on June 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Christ Fellowship Church, 5343 Northlake Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. There was also a military funeral service on June 29 at 11:00 a.m. when Bret was laid to rest in the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth Florida. (He served in the United States Army for two years immediately out of high school and then joined the Navy for three years. His father was also a Navy career officer who unfortunately also passed away earlier this year.)
People remember him as a quiet and soft-spoken person. Even though he was big physically, he was a gentle man, a softy. He was also a family man and enjoyed taking his daughter fishing. He was dedicated to the things in life that really mattered.
In April of this year, he spoke at the Inside Self-Storage World Expo in Las Vegas about motivating and enriching self storage staff. He had lots of common sense in dealing with unusual instances that come up in the self storage industry.
Bret also had over 14 years of experience in several human resources fields. He helped to create human resources policies and procedures, helped with recruitment, testing, and placement. He also helped with orientation, benefits, and labor relations.
We express our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and co-workers. His sudden passing will leave an empty spot in their lives.
Lorna Bolduc will fill in and serve as the Acting Executive Director for the FSSA.
