Yesterday, our writer, Holly Robinson, wrote about a recycling drive that was started by a group of second graders. Today, I would like to share a charitable event that was started by a third grader. (Aren’t these grade school-aged children amazing?)
When Will Constantine was a third grader he was affected when he saw people evicted from their home by his mother’s property management business. He worried about the evicted people who didn’t have any place to live.
As the weather turned cooler, he really began to worry. What would those families do to stay warm? He saw and felt their need – so he turned to his mother with an idea. He suggested to her that they collect blankets to give to the homeless. His mother agreed and Blankets & Breakfast was born.
Blankets & breakfast is based in Fort Myers, Florida. It is a charity that collects blankets, clothing, toiletries, and other essential items for the homeless in their community. On Thanksgiving morning, volunteers distribute the items collected while serving breakfast to those in need. This is the third year Blankets & Breakfast has been in operation.
“There are so many items that we all have that we don’t need,” said Kerry Constantine, Will’s mother. “It’s amazing how much impact we can have when we simply give back.”
This year, the charity created its first Facebook page. Immediately, churches, schools, and individuals started donating supplies. The response was tremendous. However, that caused one small problem: where to store all of the items collected until Thanksgiving morning?
Phil Mikel, senior manager of StoreSmart® Self storage in Fort Myers, came to the rescue. StoreSmart donated a self storage unit to Blankets & Breakfast so they can use it to store all of the donations that they receive.
“When I heard about their mission, I just knew that we had to help somehow. Hopefully having a place to store donated items will make it easier for them to collect even more this year than ever!” said Mikel.
This year, the donations will be handed out in two locations: Lions Park off U.S. 41 and Morningstar Baptist Church on Richmond Ave., both in Fort Myers.
Founded in 2006, StoreSmart has grown into a portfolio of 16 properties with approximately 1.2 million net rentable square feet. Their facilities are located in 5 states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and South Caroline.
