Treasure seekers are turning out in droves for self storage auctions across the country, mainly due to the hit A&E series “Storage Wars.” Numbers of attendees have exploded since the show premiered last fall. Feeling confident in handling large auctions and knowing the ins and outs of lien laws is on the minds of many self storage operators.

Those looking to get a firmer grasp on running safe and profitable lien sales can attend the Inside Self-Storage World Expo, March 14-16 at the Paris Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas. Two special seminars and a workshop will focus on lien sales.

Many self storage associations are petitioning state legislatures to change what they feel are outdated and overly stringent lien laws. The legal aspects of lien sales will be addressed in a seminar presented by Scott Zucker, a partner with Weissmann Zucker Euster Morochnik PC. And an in-depth Legal Learning Live workshop will be presented by Jeffrey Greenberger, a partner in Katz, Greenburger & Norton LLP. Zucker will discuss how to properly carry out a lien sale as well as offer strategies to help protect a self storage business during the process. Greenburger will conduct a more in-depth look at lien sales while providing checklists, forms and other resources.

The widely-popular show auctioneer Dan Dotson of “Storage Wars” who has 37 years of experience in the auction business  will address the myths vs. realities of industry auctions and how to professionally and safely conduct them. Lance Watkins of StorageTreasures will talk about how to increase revenue during an auction.

The ISS Expo features four comprehensive education tracks covering the industry’s most relevant issues, two days of exhibits with nearly 100 vendors, four add-on intensive workshops and multiple peer-to-peer networking events.

Whereas just a handful of bidders would show up at a storage auction months ago, the popularity of the show has driven numbers exponentially higher.  “Storage Wars” was A&E’s top-rated non-fiction show for 2010, averaging 2.4 million viewers.  There are now a number of shows trading on the storage treasure theme, such as “Auction Hunters,” “American Pickers” and “Auction Kings.” The trend in popularity continues and storage auctions have caught the attention of novice bidders as well.  Along with increasing revenue and learning the ins and outs of lien laws, the seminar and workshop at the ISS Expo can help a self storage operator learn to handle the growing crowds during an auction.
