Holy cow! Sometimes there’s news that makes you shake your head. Then there is news that almost makes you quake in your boots. That’s how I felt when I learned about what one man purchased in an auction of a self storage unit.
We’ve reported that there have been some very unique finds in self storage auctions. Once, there was a dead body in the casket. (That was the renter’s grandmother.) And World War II medals have been found in units that were auctioned. But yesterday’s find takes the cake. At least in my humble opinion.
A man purchased the contents of a storage unit at New Highlands Self Storage in Bartow, Florida. When he went to pick up the items from the unit, he found a box labeled “Caution live grenade.” This really shook up the man.
He called the County Sheriff’s Office who in turn called the state’s Fire Marshal’s Office. The fire marshal X-rayed the grenade and determined that it was live. And dangerous. Very dangerous. They took it off the premises and disposed of the grenade later in the day.
The self storage facility was closed and checked for other explosive devices. None were found. The fire marshal is investigating the incident and trying to figure out who the owner of the storage unit was and deciding whether or not to press charges against him.
