Self Storage Makes For Good TV on Both Sides of the Atlantic

Reality shows have become a pop culture phenomenon around the world. People seem to love competitions like the Amazing Race, Survivor, and Big Brother. Dating shows are usually popular. Watching celebrities like the Kardashians just live their lives are ratings grabbers too. Producers also seem to be able to find all sorts of interesting vocations to feature as well.

The self storage industry has become a popular subject matter for reality shows in the United States. Storage Wars began back in December 2010 and is now looking to have a third spin-off this fall, Storage Wars: Canada.

“Everyone wants to hit the lottery. Shows like Hoarders [the A&E program] look at people with a sickness or addiction but we tell exciting modern treasure-hunt stories. And you can actually go out and try this yourself. Anybody can bid on this stuff. The mysterious contents of a bin could buy you a car or a house or send you comfortably into retirement,” former Storage Wars star Dave Hester said in an interview in TV Guide.

Across the Atlantic the self storage industry has given rise to another popular reality television show—Storage Hoarders. Rather than focus on self storage auctions like Storage Wars the show likes to take people with self storage units and get them to sort through and figure out what should be kept and what should be thrown away.

They don’t just do this on their own of course. The show has three experts, Tom Keane, Paul Hayes, Perry Field and Tracy Martin that help people discover the hidden gems inside their unit and help them turn those things into cash. Along the way the show’s host, Aggie McKenzie helps the storage unit’s owner sort through why they keep certain things.

The show recently spent two days filming at the Dainton Self Storage branch in Heathfield. Dainton Self Storage bills itself as the top self storage company in South West England. Currently they have eight facilities in operation with two more on the way.

Storage Giant has had the camera crew from the show spend some time on site as well filming another episode for the coming season two. One customer was more than happy to gush about her experience with Storage Giant.

“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all of your help and professionalism over the past 18 months or so. I would not hesitate to return or to recommend you to others with a storage requirement. First class!”
