It takes a special person to be willing to lay their life on the line for someone else. There really isn’t a bigger sacrifice that someone can make for another. In some relationships it is almost expected, i.e. parent and child. However, there are a group of people that are willing to put their life on the line for total strangers and often for people that may not even want them there—the armed forces.
Military personnel put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and help those that have been oppressed gain there’s. They don’t do it for the money and it would be surprising to find out if many of them really did it for the travel (considering where they often go). Ask why and most of them will say the same thing—for love of country.
That sacrifice is worth the respect of the nation at a minimum, and many companies, including several within the self storage industry, do a variety of things to show their appreciation for the men and women of the military.
For example, one self storage company in San Diego, CA, called Big Box Storage Company, a portable storage provider, has offered tenants that are in the military tickets to the home opener for the San Diego Padres April 5 against the World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants.
Like the good people at Big Box Storage Company, many self storage companies offer discounts to military personnel.
In 2005 Congress formed the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission with the purpose of closing several bases around the country. This of course called for the redistribution of personnel all over the country as the changes were implemented.Due to these closures and reassignments that are expected to be completed this year, there have been some communities that have seen an additional 10,000 people looking for a place to live.
With many families looking for new homes they sometimes have the need for a self storage facility as they transition from location to another and try to get settled in. To assist military personnel as they move about the country several companies that offer discounted rates to military personnel including a handful of national franchises like 21st Century Self Storage, A + Moving and Storage, and Metropolitan Van and Storage.
Self Storage facilities are not the only ones in the self storage industry that want show military personnel some respect and appreciation. Ron Raboud, CEO of the Rabco Corporation which builds pre-engineered metal buildings for the self storage industry has started an organization called the Wounded Warrior Project which takes wounded veterans on hunting and fishing trips in different areas across the United States and Cananda.
“My motivation to found and pursue this organization is two-fold. I want to honor our wounded military veterans as well as the memories of my parents. My dad was a wounded World War II veteran. I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor them both,” Raboud says.
