Self Storage Industry Establishing Strong Presence on Television

The self storage industry has been on television for years, but usually in a minor supporting role. Typically a self storage unit has been the place where something has been hidden or the location of some sort of crime, but in recent years the industry has stepped out and started to take a leading role in some programs.

This is of course thanks to the growing popularity of reality television. When the A&E Network first gave Storage Wars a try back in 2010 they couldn’t have known that the show would become so popular that it would spawn not one, but three spin-offs. Storage Wars: Texas has enjoyed a successful two year so far. A New York version just started in January 2013. A Canadian version is in the works now as well.

The popularity of the shows is completely understandable. The basic premise speaks to just about everyone; taking a chance on something (buying a self storage unit at auction largely without seeing hat is in it) in hopes of finding something greater. Since the first version of the show debuted there have been a number of stories about people finding all sorts of valuables inside units bought at auction such as classic cars, gold, money, historical artifacts, and so much more.

It is not just people in the United States and Canada that have taken to self storage based television shows. Across the pond in the UK the program Storage Hoarders has become popular. In it the show takes a look inside the storage units of people and gets them to see how much of what they are holding onto is unnecessary. Often times they are successful with getting people to sort through what they have in storage and even help them make some money.

The show will soon feature Storage Giant, one of the top self storage providers in the UK. Customers were more than happy to talk about their experience as a tenant of Storage Giant.

“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all of your help and professionalism over the past 18 months or so. I would not hesitate to return or to recommend you to others with a storage requirement. First class!”

Like the shows in the United States, Storage Hoarders is still relatively new having made its debut in December 2012. Storage Giant says it could be on Hoarders again, and that is also in talks to develop a show similar to Storage Wars.
