Self Storage Industry and Making the Most of Social Media

Keeping in touch with people used to be kind of hard, and often required a lot of effort. Writing letters, making phone calls—they all take time; time that as responsibilities pile on top of us is harder and harder to free up. With the advent of social media communicating with the masses is just a few key strokes away.

Social media may have begun as a means for the masses to stay in touch with friends it has evolved into so much more. Individuals use it to communicate with other individuals so there is no reason why businesses like those in the self storage industry can’t do the same.

Many members of the self storage industry have had a lot of success in a number of different social media outlets. Lots of them now have Facebook pages which allow them to advertise specials, contests, and just find out what tenants are thinking.

The great thing about social media for business is what makes it so appealing for individuals as well—it’s free. As a result millions upon millions of people use social media everyday making it an ideal place to promote their brand.

StorageMart, a self storage company with facilities in the United States and Canada, is like many self storage companies and has a Facebook page to promote itself, but it also has a YouTube Channel

Some of the more popular videos on the channel are its ‘How Much Fits in a Storage Unit’ series. They’ve tested a number of scenarios like how much Thanksgiving Dinner could fit in a self storage unit, how much bubble bath,  and how much pet food can fit.

Last year during the March Madness tournament they decided to see how many basketballs could fit in one (217). All of the balls were donated to the local Boys and Girls Club after the clip was filmed.

USSelfStorageLocator.com, a site that helps people find self storage facilities across the country, has revamped its Twitter page in order to better promote not just their network but the self storage industry as a whole.

“The twitter site has been newly revamped and followers are liking the tweets and the site; we have had positive increases in mentions and followers, follow us @storagelocator,” says Victor Dante, CEO of USSelfStorageLocator.com.

Along with promoting the site they plan on tweeting fun and exciting pictures of what people have and could store in a self storage unit.
