Self Storage in the 21st Century

Back in the day it only took a quality product and a little advertising to get ahead in the business world. Make or provide something that people really want and you were virtually a guaranteed success. As the 21st century progresses though, it takes more than just a quality product to be a success.

No matter how good your product is, whether you are in the self storage industry, or something else, if the people do not know about it they will not buy it.

Conventional advertising is not enough anymore. The self storage industry has never been known for being one heavy into traditional advertising, i.e. commercials, billboards, etc., but it has fully embraced the avenues that technology has opened up.

Social media and the internet has opened up a whole new mode of marketing and advertising that allows companies like those in the self storage industry to target specific audiences and get the most for their advertising dollar. Now there is rarely a self storage facility that does not have a website; many also have Facebook pages and there are a number that have twitter accounts as well.

However, the problem with technology is that it is constantly advancing. What was cutting edge one moment becomes middle of the road in the next, and before you know it is obsolete.

It is no longer enough to just have a website with all the latest information on it. Facebook and Twitter are great, but if that is all you have your missing out on the latest piece of technology—mobile applications.

Everyone has heard the infamous question,” Is there an app for that?” With there now being more smart phones in use (100.9 million) to personnel computers (92.1 million), it is a question that more and more self storage companies will soon be answering with a yes.

“We continually look for new and innovative ways to enhance our customers’ experience whether they are at one of our facilities, at our website, on Facebook or Twitter or now, mobile based,” said Todd Manganaro, president of ezStorage Corporation.

Their mobile application is free and it helps users locate any of the companies self storage facilities as well as make reservations. Tenants can also pay their bill via their phone as well. Just to make it a little more customer friendly, their application is internet-based so it doesn’t take up memory on your phone.

Now if only there could be an app that would pack and transport everything you want to put in self storage…
