Self Storage Facilities Lends a Helping Hand beyond Christmas

Around the holidays there is a lot of press generated about how many self storage facilities around the country lend a helping hand to those that are less fortunate acting as donation drops for toy, clothing, and food drives for a number of organizations. For many self storage companies the helping hand does not end there.

Prior to Christmas, Budget Self Storage in St. Petersburg, Florida, announced its support for a local organization that helps victims of domestic violence, CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse). CASA has been helping victims of domestic violence in the St. Petersburg area since 1977 by providing them with much needed refuge, food, and clothing in their time of need.

Self storage facilities have stepped up to help victims of domestic violence in the past as well. SmithStoreIt, a facility in Huntsville, Alabama, announced in May of 2010 that they would be donating 30 units for victims of domestic violence to use when needed.

“This is one less obstacle for them to overcome,” said Bill Farris, director of Crisis Services of North Alabama.

Victims that are in need of self storage can contact Self Store It by going through Hope Place, a domestic violence shelter that is run by the Crisis Service of North Alabama. If they do they will get to use a self storage unit for free for the first three months. People are still eligible if they do not go through Hope Place, but will need to have a police reports an ID.

“We attach a lot of value to the things in our life,” Farris said. “Things can be replaced, but it’s not the same.”

By allowing victims to have use of a storage unit for at least three months for free victims do not have to worry about trying to get their cherished belongings out all at once, but can have the option of trying to move some things out a little at a time until they feel ready to leave.

Smith challenged other self storage facilities to step up and support domestic violence victims and some have answered the call. Coastal Carrier Moving & Storage has been provinding assistance to vicims in the Carolinas and Virginia. A-1 Self Storage in San Diego has been a supporter of Becky’s House, a non-for-profit organization that provides victims with 30 days in a shelter to figure out there next step which could be entrance into their 18-month residential program. Westy Self Storage in New York has held a charity drive to benefit the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
