The self storage industry has been going strong in the United States for many years now. With the industry comprised of over 50,000 facilities now it is definitely doing well. In other countries it is a different picture as the people are still learning the joy and pleasure that a self storage unit can bring. As they do there will likely be more events like the upcoming Self Storage Expo in Brazil.
Back in late July the announcement was made that the first self storage expo in Latin America (called Expo 13) was going to be held in Brazil in early November. Industry events like this are a great time for operators to learn from industry experts and fellow operators in attendance.
It also shows that the industry must be robust enough to warrant the expense involved in putting on and hosting an event such as an expo.
“The first Latin American trade show and education expo in Brazil will benefit all members of LASSA as it will offer educational sessions aimed at the unique nature of our market, as well as the opportunity to learn from other operators in the region and to see firsthand the products and technologies developed specifically for our industry,” said Nancy Torres, President of Latin American Self Storage.
A schedule was posted fairly quickly following the announcement, but it had precious few details on it. The one thing that was known was the keynote speaker– Patrick Reilly, Chairman of the Board of the Self Storage Association and President and CEO of Urban Self Storage.
With the event fast approaching (November 4 and 5) organizers have started to release details for the bulk of the schedule:
A panel including Ernesto Arzac, President of Bodegas Usted Guarda in Mexico; Orlando Wong, General Manager of MegaStorage in Panama; Mike Lukowiecky of LOQ, Costa Rica; and Flavio Del Soldato, Jr., Owner of In-Box, Guarda-Tudo, Sao Paulo, Brazil, will be moderated by Allan Paiotti, CEO of Guarde Aqui, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Eduardo Carvajal from Ixaya SA de CV will talk about using demographic data
Arie Rezepka, President of AKI KB in Chile and a licensed architect will discuss buiding self storage facilities in Latin America.
David Blum, President of Better Management Systems, LLC, will talk about marketing and operations in growing markets like those common in Latin American countries.
“The expo includes over four hours of face time with vendors plus an additional one and one-half-hour networking cocktail hour at the end of day one,” says Blum who is also co-producer of Expo 13. “To start day two, a one-hour workshop is planned to assist the newly formed regional self-storage associations in the mechanics of growing and managing local associations.”
