It is entirely possible for individuals to make a difference in society. However, it is also true that when individuals bond over a common cause and work together they are able to accomplish much more than they would have alone. Plus, when you use team work it is a lot easier to get the task at hand done and have fun at the same time.

Take the good people at Smart Self Storage (which is part of the San Diego Self Storage family) in Solana Beach, California, as an example. The facility has signed up to be one of the primary sponsors of the 16th Annual Del Mar Solana Beach Sunrise Rotary Turf Bocce Ball Family Day and Tournament.

Boccee Ball is a game that can be played between individuals, but will be done with teams during the tournament. Points are scored by the team who gets his/her balls closest to the jack. Only the team that has the closest ball to the jack is able to score.

“Last year, seven SDSS teams advanced to the final round,” said J. Terry Aston, managing member of SDSS. “Two of the seven SDSS teams competed in the final round. This year we hope to take home the championship in support of this event that will benefit abused children, foster youth, and a refuge for victims of abuse.”

Proceeds from the event will go to three different charities, Voices for Children, Just in Time, and the Community Resource Center. All three charities work to help children that are victims of abuse and are a part of the foster care system in the San Diego area. A portion of the proceeds will also go to benefit projects working to eradicate polio, provide impoverished area with clean water, and help educate children that do not have regular access to school.

The tournament is something that San Diego Self Storage has been a regular part of for a number of years. Each year they do a good job of keeping the focus where it belongs—on the charities and helping people. The game is there to give people something fun to do in the process.

Chris Wood, an area manager for San Diego Self Storage, said this after last year’s event that raised $50,000:

“…It was not about the final score or making it to the final round, our efforts have given so many organizations a chance to experience the best in humanity. Winning is not everything; in the end the experience and the journey is what shapes a persons’ soul —-from that we can say we are all winners.”
