Having an extra day off from work is a nice perk to any weekend and is enough to make most people happy for whatever holiday happens to grant it. This past weekend people had Monday off for Memorial Day. While many probably took to the ballpark, beach, park, or to the backyard to grill there was likely a portion that forgot why they have the time to do it.
It was because of the sacrifice of men and women in the Armed Forces past and present. Supporting the troops is something that many do recognize on Memorial Day—and every other day like many companies in the self storage industry.
Most self storage facilities will have an ongoing discount for members of the military, but they also engage in activities throughout the year to show support and help those returning from action.
One such company is AC Self Storage Solutions. Recently the company began a program that it will have at all of its facilities, a partnership with Charity Storage. The concept is pretty simple. A unit is set aside prior to a facility’s next auction for tenants and people in the community to donate items. On the day of the auction the contents are sold.
A portion of the proceeds goes to aid in cancer research (via Charity Storage). Another portion goes to aid in the program of the host facility’s choosing. In the case of AC Self Storage Solutions it is going to be the Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation.
What it does is use fly fishing as a form of therapy to help veterans that suffer traumatic injuries in combat.
“As a two-time veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, I feel that I have a special connection to many of our American Heroes that pass through this program. I have seen incredible positive changes in the service men and women whom we have had the honor to serve,” said Troy Downing, CEO of AC Self Storage Solutions.
The Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation is not the only one of its kind. There is another non-for-profit that uses the serenity of fishing to benefit wounded veterans, the Wounded Warriors Anglers. In February Champions Self Storage in Florida held a community yard sale to raise funds for the program.
“Every year we have a community yard sale here on the property,” property manager Lindy Lord-Cooper said. “This year the yard sale was on Feb. 22. Anybody that has items to sell we offer a 10 x 10-foot spot for $15 and all of that $15 is donated to a local organization. This year the organization we chose is Wounded Warrior Anglers.”
