Sometimes you have to give a little in order to get a lot. You have to spend money in order to make money. However you put it, it has been shown in the past in many different industries, not just the self storage one, that when businesses give things away they tend to get repaid in loyal customers and probably even more customers through referrals.
The Lock Up, a self storage facility in Chicago, took that idea to heart when they offered up a sweepstakes on their Facebook page last November. Customers that entered had a chance to win a free IPod Touch, one for each of the companies 30 facilities nationwide.
“While our high-end facilities are definitely central to our success, we also believe that our emphasis on community outreach and genuine, two-way communication with our clients makes us a cut above the rest in our industry,” says Andrea Carnes, Vice President of Operations for The Lock Up Self Storage. “Facebook has really been a fantastic way to keep people apprised of our latest storage deals and campaigns such as the iPod Touch giveaway, as well as to garner any comments or suggestions they may have for us.”
The winners were announced December 15.
With the advent of the electronic age the internet gives companies much more exposure to their customer base than ever before. Add in the emergence of social media and companies can literally communicate on an individual basis with literal ease. Using contests, specifically ones hosted via the internet and social media, are becoming common place among the self storage industry.
A number of self storage companies have run video related competitions. Typically entrants are told to make a video no longer than two minutes in length showcasing the utter chaos and clutter that they live in which only a self storage unit can save them from.
Manhattan Mini Storage held one such contest in 2010 and gave away one full year of free storage, free storage supplies, the help of a personal organizer, and a free move into your new storage room. Life Storage, a company based out of Chicago with 16 different locations, ran a similar contests and gave away a free storage unit as well.
It just goes to show that with a little creativity, a crafty web designer, and the willingness to spend a little money in order to make money can result in innovative promotional strategies that will only payoff in increased business.
