When I say ‘motorcycle riders,’ what typically comes to mind? Big Harley Davidson motorcycles? Muscle-bound and tattooed riders with beards flapping in the wind? Bandanas wrapped around foreheads? Sleeveless black leather vests and black leather pants?
Do you think of needy families and of toys? Probably not.
With Christmas just around the corner, mothers, fathers, children – and even motorcycle riders — are thinking of toys. The motorcycle-riding group, Freedom Cruisers Riding Club, is focusing on how they can help needy families have a good Christmas. They are helping with a toy ‘run’ for needy children in Baytown, Texas.
Cruisin’ Texas Toy Drive organizers believe that every child should have a toy at Christmas time. This event is geared to help families who are in need and is the seventh year for the toy drive.
Safekeeping Self Storage has joined Cruisin’ Texas Toy Drive in their efforts. Safekeeping Self Storage is donating space where all of the donated toys can be stored until the day of the activity. This space makes it easy for volunteers to sort and organizes the toys.
Safekeeping Self Storage customers and local community members are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys for the toy drive. Or, if they choose, they can donate monies that will be used to purchase toys. About 2,500 children are expected to attend the even so a lot of toys need to be donated.
Motorbike riders who want to ride at the event are charged ten dollars or a new unwrapped toy per rider. The riders will gather before the event begins so that they can drive en mass to the event. (All of those motorcycles will add lots of excitement to the event!)
On December 21, the children (accompanied by a parent or guardian) will gather outside the Baytown Community Center. The motorcycle riders will come roaring in and then everyone knows that Santa Claus will soon be arriving.
During the festivities, children can have their photos taken with Santa. Santa’s elves will help the children pick out a toy (and necessary batteries) for themselves. Kids can also have their picture taken with Santa. Punch and cookies will be served to add to the cheerful festivities.
The Freedom Cruisers Riding Club is a free, family-oriented motorcycle riding club. They represent motorcycle riding, family, unity, traveling, fun, and camaraderie.
