Nothing Like Free Space in the Self Storage Industry

There have been a lot of ‘great’ movies throughout time like The Great Gatsby (1974), The Great Escape (1963), and the Great Mouse Detective (1986) to name a few. Okay, maybe not the mouse movie, but when you call something great expectations are raised and people expect to get a certain something. SelfStorage.com was aware of that when it dubbed its latest contest ‘The Great Storage Giveaway.’

The concept behind the contest is pretty straightforward and one that is becoming commonplace with many self storage companies. Make use of social media—something that is free—and encourage people to interact with company accounts with the promise of a prize being awarded at a later date.

SelfStorage.com, one of the leading self storage aggregator web sites, is using social media to hold what it is calling The Great Storage Giveaway. To be a part of it they want to hear from you via many of the popular social media outlets.

Enter on their website for one entry, but then earn additional ones by liking them on Facebook, following them on Twitter and Google+, and then by tweeting about the giveaway.

Come August 31 they will select one entry to win one great prize—a free year of self storage (valued at $1000). For someone who could use a little extra space this is one great prize!

Making use of social media is nothing new for self storage facilities. In recent years the industry has become quite adept at using social media to engage current tenants with contests and to make sure they are happy. Many are also becoming good at using it to engage prospective customers in order to share specials.

StorageMart is no stranger to social media, and use it often to communicate specials and contests. In March they used Pinterest in order to give back to the community. It was called the ‘Pin for a Cure Drive.’ For every pin up to 5000 from March 7-31 the company pledged to donate $1 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“Our philanthropic efforts are focused on improving the lives of children,” says Ms. Little. “Families who rent self storage are usually in the midst of a transition. Moving and change can be difficult for kids, especially when they’re sick.”

So thanks to social media it appears like many within the self storage industry are capable of great things!
