Many owners of self storage facilities participate in service projects and charitable organizations that support and improve their communities. Louis and Phyllis Friedman of Stack & Store Mini Storage are an example of community minded business owners who seek to reach out to their community and assist when possible.
Because of their support and generosity, the newest Ben Carson Reading Room was opened at the Southampton Middle School in Bel Air, Maryland. The room has a jungle theme and looks more like a cozy family room than a library. This room has comfortable chairs, lamps, decorations, and home-like bookshelves. Judy Fida, reading room coordinator for the school, envisions the rooom as a place for students to seek refuge and to get inspired and motivated to read.
In 1994, Dr. Benjamin Carson, pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins, and his wife, Candy, created the Carson Scholars Fund. The Ben Carson Reading Project was part of the fund. The purpose of the reading project was to assist schools in creating a nurturing environment where children can develop their reading skills in a safe environment.
The reading room at the middle school is the ninth reading room sponsored by Louis and Phyllis Friedman. It is the eighth reading room in the Harford County public schools bringing the total of reading rooms up to 58. There are Ben Carson Reading Rooms in seven states.
While Mrs. Carson was able to attend the opening of the reading room, Dr. Carson was not. However, he ‘spoke’ to attendees via a pre-recorded video. He talked about his growing up years and how his mother encouraged him to read every day. She knew that reading was vital and that if a person could read then that person could do anything.
“I challenge each and every one of you to do your very best, and I encourage you to read every day,” Carson said, “and to always think big.”
Five more Reading Rooms will open simultaneously on October 18, 2011. The 6th Annual Ben Carson Reading Day is November 14, 2011
In addition to sponsoring reading rooms, Louis and Phyllis Friedman are also actively involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs. They generously pay Dr. Ben Carson’s honorarium when he is the keynote speaker for the steak and burger dinner for the Boys & Girls Clubs. They have also donated to the Carson Scholars Fund scholarship program, support local little league teams, and the Havre de Grace Activity Center.
