Mini-Storage Messenger Awards Outstanding Green Facility Award

Safe & Secure Automated Self Storage, of Coconut Creek, Florida, has received another award for the green facility that it opened last April. Mini-Storage Messenger has selected Safe & Secure as its 2010 Outstanding Green Facility of the Year. Mini-Storage Messenger presents the Outstanding Green Facility Award each year, for a self storage facility with a high level of commitment to the environment and to its local community.

Safe & Secure is the first self storage facility worldwide to use Westfalia Technology’s Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) technology, a new, patent-pending storage automation system. As a result, Safe & Secure has received a lot of media attention nationally and internationally. To access self storage units at Safe & Secure, customers must enter a PIN code (both at the front gate, and at the desired loading door). Then the automated machinery retrieves the customer’s storage module, presenting it to the customer at ground level. The building has 539 such modules. One hundred of the modules can store vehicles.

The automation, though, is not the reason for Safe & Secure’s many awards. The facility is winning awards because of its energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly features. It meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

standards, which were developed by the United States Green Building Council and are widely recognized as the industry standard for green construction in the United States. Safe & Secure, despite its automation, uses a low level of electric power. It is able to do so because it has no interior lighting and because it uses very energy efficient building systems. Its grounds are landscaped to conserve water, and the storage modules are pressurized to reduce energy loss. Air quality in the building is unusually good, and the amount of waste produced on site is lower than average. The facility also uses green cleaning and pest control methods.

When Safe & Secure was opened, its vice president, Paul Talley, commented in a release: “The state-of-the-art technology used to create the facility will accentuate self-service, providing customers access to prime storage space 24-hours-a-day with user friendly, convenient, and quick in-and-out service….With this system, facility owners also increase their net leasable area up to 25 percent and lower their operating costs by as much as 50 percent, while also maximizing land space due to the floor-area ratio being calculated on one floor.”

In addition to Mini-Storage Messenger‘s Outstanding Green Facility Award, Safe & Secure has also received a Green Building of America award from Real Estate & Construction Review magazine.
