Looking Back at 2013

2013 has been an amazing year. As I look back and review some of the year’s events, three themes really stood out to me. The first theme is community service.

Self storage owners and managers are very community minded and find ways to help needy families in their communities. They continued to do charitable work in 2013. They participated in drives to collect food, clothing, and toys for needy families. They donated money to children’s hospitals and research for cancer. They took in meals to senior citizens – and some have even started a program of delivering pet food to those seniors. Some have even reached out beyond the boundaries of their community. They helped victims affected by the tornado in Oklahoma and the flooding in Colorado.

The second theme that struck me was that self storage is growing around the world. Aple-Atcan Self Storage is expanding their facilities in Ontario, Canada. (Canada has around 3,000 facilities.) Len Lothian Store & More in Edinburgh, Scotland, now has several facilities around the city. (The UK has 815 facilities.) And, self storage facilities in Australia now number over 1,000.

Self storage is growing in Europe, the Far East, and in Africa, too. In the region of Loiret, Fence, self storage has doubled from October 2012 through October 2013. China has built their first self storage facility (China Self Storage Co, Ltd.) in Shanghai and has plans for three more facilities. Stor-Age Self Storage has expanded internationally and now has 17 facilities in all of the major provinces in South Africa.

The third theme that I noticed supports the second theme. All of those new facility, owners, managers, and employees need training. So, conferences and trade shows are now being in held in various places outside of the United States. ASBRASS, the Self-Storage Association of Brazil, held their inaugural expo in Sao Paulo in November. (SiteLink, the leader in self storage management software was a main sponsor. Their company has users in Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Panama, and Chile.)

The European Storage Conference was held in London in October. This conference was the biggest event ever held in Europe. Next year’s conference will be held in Sweden and conference organizers hope that it draw even more attendees.

Held in March, 2013, Self Storage Asia was the first expo that was held in Hong Kong. Attendees came from China, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and even the United States.

All in all, it was a year of success and growth. Here’s hoping that 2014 will bring more of the same.
