Now that summer is here, yard sales are springing up all over the place. Some yard sales are sponsored by individuals or single families. Sometimes, families join together to create a huge yard sale in the hopes of drawing bigger crowds. Sometimes, even self storage facilities sponsors yard sales for charitable organizations. LifeStorage in Matteson, Illinois, is one of those storage facilities.
It will be holding its Second Annual Yard Sale on June 2nd. It will be at 21700 Cicero Avenue in Matteson, Illinois. They have been accepting donations since March so there should be lots of items for sale. People can still drop off donations for the sale if they want.
Store Manager, Allison Thompson, has been keeping track of the items in preparation of the event. “We wanted the event to be as successful as last year’s, so we reached out to our customers, passed out fliers after business hours. Once again, the response has been wonderful. This year we’ve received a lot of clothes, furniture, a television, and even fish tanks,” Thompson said. “The most unique item we’ve received is a Steck upright piano that’s in very good condition and still plays well. It’s going to be fun seeing how much it sells for and who the lucky buyer is.”
All proceeds from the yard sale will go to The Pantry of Rich Township. The Pantry, a not-for-profit extension of the Salvation Army, provides food to low-income residents of the Rich Township and Park Forest who meet the guidelines of the Department of Human Services. The Pantry relies solely on donations to keep its shelves stocked.
It is open 1:30 – 3:0 p.m. Monday through Friday. Individuals can get groceries once a month. Fresh produce is available on the first Wednesday of every month from 10:00 a.m. until noon. To be able to pick up the food, people have to have a current driver’s license, Illinois I.D., or a current bill of the month with their name printed on it.
The Pantry provides food assistance at no cost to more than 900 families who live in the surrounding communities of Rich Township. They also will pay $50 on a utilities bill if a family has received a pink final notice from the electric company or the water department. Families can get assistance with a utility bill only once every twelve months.
LifeStorage has held other fund raising events in the past. “We’ve received a lot of great feedback from the community. We’ve been holding these events for over a year, now: last year’s Yard Sale, our Charity Car Wash, the food drive, and the Hunger Walk, which we’ll be participating in again this year,” Thompson said. “I have had several customers tell me that they’re happy that we are willing to try to do some good in the community that we do business in, and that they live in. With each event comes more support and we couldn’t be more thankful. If you’re looking for something to do this Saturday, June 2nd, stop by our location for some bargain shopping for a great cause. Don’t forget, you could be the lucky owner of a new-used piano!”
