Liedkie Moving and Storage announced that it will be expanding and building a new storage facility in Guilderland, New York, which is in the central-northwest part of Albany County. Liedkie already has a facility in the nearby areas of Burnt Hills and Rotterdam.
When Rick Ramsey, owner, decided to build a new facility, he decided he wanted property that was not in an industrial park. He found and purchased 10 acres of farmland. The new facility will be built at 4773 Western Turnpike.
Ramsey will invest $2.5 million in the construction of his new building, which will be built in two phases. The first phase will be a 25,000 square-foot building that has 200 units. He projects that this phase should be completed by March.
The cost of this project is higher than others that Ramsey has completed. This is due to the fact that New York recently required new storage units to have full foundations. Also, the drainage system, security system, climate-controlled units, and the fire protection system have upped the price. When the building is completed, the facility will be named A Metro Self Storage.
Ten thousand square feet of the new building will be climate-controlled. This area will be marketed to food distributors, pharmaceutical companies, and other businesses. There will also be 30 units for vehicle storage. In the spring of 2014, phase two will begin and will add the remaining 20,000 feet to the facility.
Ramsey indicated that he became aware of a growing demand for storage because of increasing home ownership in the Guilderland area. There are many high-tech companies in the area. Companies such as General Electric, NanoTech, and GlobalFoundries have offices in the area. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is also nearby.
These businesses attract a young, high-skilled workforce into the area. Over the last three years, one business brought in almost 1,200 new employees to the region. This influx has put a big demand on the housing market in the area. Many people who need homes can’t find housing. They end up renting which means their living space is smaller than what will accommodate their possessions. These people need a place to put keep their belongings until they can get a home, which increases the demand for self storage units.
Liedkie Moving and Storage has been in business for nearly a century.
