Innovative Professors Design House That Can Be Contained By Portable Storage Unit

Two Tulane University professors have designed a 1,000 sq. ft. house that breaks down to fit entirely into a portable storage unit, ready for shipping. The National Portable Storage Association (NPSA) is promoting the concept, designed by Judith Kinnard, professor of architecture and Tiffany Lin, assistant professor of architecture.

“We see more and more architects experimenting with portable storage units,” said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the NPSA, a nonprofit membership association, the NPSA is dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. “This home may not be built from containerized storage, but it’s meant to fit into a portable storage unit for shipping. Imagine if you could ship a container and unfold it as a home. That could be the future.”

The portable home concept recently won a design contest for innovation. It is being called the SunShower SSIP house and is built to run off a grid in the event of an emergency. The two-bedroom, two-bath house is designed to fit into a standard shipping container. It uses two roof forms that are eco-friendly. One roof collects solar energy in photovoltaic panels, while the second kind has a shower roof that is sloped to collect water. The house itself is made from energy-efficient, steel-insulated panels.

The National Portable Storage Association is dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. The organization serves those in the portable storage industry who rent, sell or lease containers, trailers and mobile offices. The NPSA assists members with industry, regulatory and workforce issues; plus, offers members networking, marketing and legislative support at national, state and local levels.

If interested in investing in the container shipping business, it is a hot market at the moment. The demand for containers is rising and this new concept of a house shipped by storage container could make it go higher. The shipping industry has been growing consistently, not just domestically, but worldwide as well.
