Self storage lender Live Oak Bank recently contributed $250,000 to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) Foundation in Wilmington, North Carolina. The donation directly endows the foundation’s fund for the Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital. To recognize the company’s generous donation, the hospital’s birthing center lobby has been renamed in its honor.

“We are honored and grateful to Live Oak Bank for this extremely generous gift. It is a testament to their philanthropic support of our community and to the hospital team who is dedicated to providing quality care to the women and children in our region,” said NHRMC Foundation Vice President of Development and Executive Director Schorr Davis in a press release. “Our patients, their parents and loved ones will benefit from this gift for many years to come.”

The Wilmington-based bank, which includes a self storage lending division, credits its growth in part to the city of Wilmington’s hospitable environment. For example, significant city incentives to promote high-end job growth have helped the company flourish.

“The city has been good to us. As much as we’ve tried to give back to the community, the community has supported us,” said J.C. Smith, engagement director for Live Oak Bank, to the Port City Record.

“The donation seemed like a natural extension of our desire to do everything we can do for our folks,” said Kate Groat, director of corporate Live Oak Bank’s philanthropy, to the source. “A lot of our young employees are getting married, getting settled down, getting houses, and you know what that means—babies.”

The donation to NHRMC, according to the release, is to support the needs of patients, families, physicians and staff at the Hospital and continue the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate, innovative and high-quality care to patients.

“We consider it a privilege to give back, and NHRMC was the perfect recipient,” Smith said to the Port City Record. “ We have had—and will have—many employees pass through the doors of the Betty H. Cameron Women’s and Children’s Hospital.”

Founded in 2008, Live Oak focuses on support for small businesses and specialty areas such as self-storage. The bank provides small-business loans for acquisitions, new construction, refinancing and other real estate loans. According to industry magazine Inside Self Storage, its readers voted the bank as Best Finance Company, as part of its 2016 “Best Business Poll.”
