The Florida Self Storage Association announced yesterday that it has opened registration for its 2010 “New Horizons” Conference and Expo. Vendor exhibit applications are still being accepted as well. The conference will be held from May 5 to 7, at Disney’s Contemporary Hotel, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Although the FSSA conference is held annually, this year several new events have been added to the schedule, including several pre-conference activities. This year’s conference is being sponsored by U.S. Door & Building Components, MiniCo Publishing, Noah’s Ark Development, Bader Company, Inside Self-Storage, and Phone Smart Sales Solutions.

One of the featured events at the FSSA conference will be panel discussion, called “The Storage Summit.” Panelists will include Anne Ballard, from Universal Management Co.; Michael Haugh, from Absolute Management; Brenda Scarborough, from Accountable Management; Marc Smith, from Personal Mini Storage; Steve Wilson, from Hide-Away Storage; and Paul Martin, the keynote speaker.

The conference will also include an online silent auction to benefit the Special Olympics of Florida. The Special Olympics is the world’s largest provider of free, year-round sports training and competitions for children and adults who have developmental disabilities. It serves nearly three million people in more than 180 countries. The Special Olympics of Florida serves 15,000 athletes every year, training in 20 different team and individual sports.

The 2009 FSSA Conference and Expo included 10 seminars, 63 vendor exhibits, and a panel discussion focusing on the state of the self-storage industry. The 2009 conference also raised more than $3,500 to donate to the Special Olympics of Florida.

The FSSA is a trade association dedicated to promoting the interests of the self-storage industry in Florida. It monitors legislation affecting the self-storage industry in Florida, and provides members with networking and educational opportunities. In addition to the annual conference and expo, the FSSA organizes education sessions throughout the year. For example, today the FSSA is holding a session in University Park, FL, including an open forum discussing the challenges of operating a self-storage facility in the current economic climate. The forum today will be led by panelists Chip Cordeo, of Summit Construction & Management Group; Travis Lawhorne, of Accountable Management; and Scott Kelly, of Synergy Storage Group.
