In the business world—self storage and otherwise—one of the most important decisions you have to make at the onset involves your structure. Not only do you need to figure out how big you want it, what shape, how tall, etc., but you also need to make it as energy efficient as you can.
That will likely depend on how good your initial financing is. However, if you don’t take what concerns you can at the onset general operations could become quite expensive (not to mention the cost of retrofitting the place later).
A new self storage facility in England took the size and energy efficiency of its structure under heavy consideration during construction. What they ended up creating was a self storage facility you can’t help but see and will save the company money on its energy bill.
Storagebase’s new facility in Wednesbury stands seven stories tall so the height alone will make it hard to miss, but what will make it really stand out is not the height. It’s the color.
The company used 5200 square meters of panels on the outside of the structure in contrasting colors of red, white, and gray.
“Using Kingspan insulated panels with contrasting colours was a relatively simple way to create a visually stunning and unique building. Kingspan provided very valuable assistance on the Storagebase project during the initial design work. They also helped us overcome some of the challenging access issues on-site,” Simon Hallowell, Director from Hallford Refurbishments Ltd (who installed the panels) said.
The panels were not selected with color as a primary concern, but with their functionality. The insulated material they are made of form to create an air-tight wall that will keep the elements out and receives a high grade for fire safety as well as thermal insulation.
So not only do they look good, but they are going to keep tenant’s belongings safe and secure. The company could not be happier with what the product does and how it looks.
“Functionality and speed of construction will always come first for storage buildings, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be interesting architecturally,” Martin Robinson, National Sales Manager for Kingspan Insulated Panels said.
In a country where the self storage industry is still growing it will certainly bolster consumer confidence to know that the company spared no expense (the panels cost around 5 million pounds) to keep their belongings safe. It doesn’t hurt that the place will be easy to find thanks to the color scheme either!
