Dymon Self Storage has partnered with Soles4Souls in an effort to collect gently worn shoes that will be given to people in need around the world. From April 1st through April 30, shoe donations can be dropped off at Dymon Self Storage. Monday through Friday, Dymon is open from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday they are open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The mayor of Ottawa proclaimed April as Soles4Souls Month. The goal is to collect 200,000 pairs of shoes. This project is in conjunction with Sole4Souls Canada’s Million Shoe Mission whose goal is to collect 1 million pairs of shoes over the next few years and have every province in Canada participate.
Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects and distributes footwear to people in need around the world. They donated shoes to victims of the tsunami that hit Southeast Asia in 2004. They donated shoes to communities hit by Hurricane Katrina. Since 2005, they have given away over 7 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes to people in need in 125 countries such as Kenya, Nepal, Haiti, and even the United States.
Shoes help prevent the spread of parasitic diseases that plague over 1.4 billion people worldwide. Shoes are a basic human necessity. The reality of life for many individuals in developing nations is that having a pair of shoes is a rarity. Over 300 million children worldwide are without shoes.
Shoes are very often considered a required part of the school uniform in developing countries. Without shoes, many children are unable to attend school to get an education that could help end their poverty.
Take a good hard look at the picture on the right. Now, look down at the shoes on your feet. Think about how many pairs of shoes you have in your closet. How many do you actually NEED? How many idly sit on the floor in your closet?
If you live in Ottawa, seriously consider how many of your gently used shoes you can donate to Soles4Soles. Box them up. Then, swing by Dymon Self Storage and drop off your shoes. They have 6 locations around Ottawa: South Keys, Prince of Wales, Innes, Coventry, Walkley, and Kanata.
A needy person somewhere in the world will be grateful for your donation.
(If you do not live in Ottawa, go to Soles4Souls and inquire how you can make your donation.)
