Road trips have become popular options for family vacations because driving is much cheaper than flying. Many times, family vacations are just a short trip to go camping at state park, a visit to a national monument, or sometimes a long cross-country journey to visit grandma.
Door to Door Storage is sponsoring a photo contest called “The Great American Road Trip.” This contest is reminiscent of the Route 66 era and celebrates cross-country road travel.
The contest runs from now until July 31, 2012. People can submit a photo of one of the road trips that they have taken on Door to Door Storage’s Facebook Page. In addition to the photo, contestants need to include a 500 word synopsis of the trip that includes where the trip started, where it ended, how many miles it covered, how long they were on the road, and a favorite place or memory from the trip. The favorite memory could be hilarious, serious, or tender.
Route 66 was one of the most famous roads in America. It ran from Chicago through Missouri down to Texas and ended up in Los Angeles, California. It was 2,448 miles long and was made popular by a hit song and a television show in the 1960s.
Many people traveled this road during the Dust Bowl era in the 1930s. Businesses along the route prospered from all of the traffic. However, with the advent of the interstate highway system, the route was removed from the United States highway system because it was ‘no longer relevant.’
Tracey Kelly, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Door to Door, said that a road trip is not just about the destination. It is also about the journey – the good times, the funny times, the unique experiences, and even the frustrating ones.
Photos and stories entered in the contest will be voted on Door to Door’s Facebook page. Voting will take place from August 1st through August 31st. The photo and photo story with the most votes will win either a $1,000 cash prize or a free two-container move. The thousand-dollar cash award could fund the next road trip adventure for the winner.
Participants do not need to be a Door to Door customer. There will be a runner-up prize for the individual who receives the second most votes.
