Big Yellow Self Storage supported the Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust Zambian appeal 2011. The program collected balls, Premier League football shirts, shorts, and playing kits. Donations were collected by and stored at the Big Yellow Self Storage facility until the donations were recently shipped out to Zambia.
DHL has also been a strong leader in the effort. They provided the transportation of the items from the United Kingdom to Zambia. It is estimated that it will take 8 to 10 days for the donations to arrive at their final destination. Mandy Lloyd, Area Sales Manager at DHL Express, organized the transportation for the donations.
Next week, a team of Swindon’s community football coaches will travel to Livingstone, the city that will receive the donations. The coaches will spend eight days sharing a coaching program with local football coaches and youth workers. They will also hold a football festival for teams around the area.
These donations will make a huge difference to the community where they are going to. Many school aged children play soccer on makeshift soccer fields of overgrown grass. Most of them don’t even own sneakers and play barefoot. Parents encourage their children to play soccer because it is a safe activity for them to participate in and they are less vulnerable to exploitation. When the children finished playing soccer, they immediately go home ensuring that they don’t get swept up into unsafe activities.
Jon Holloway, Football in the Community development manager, was very pleased with the donations and the support from the community. He is especially grateful to Big Yellow Self Storage and DHL for the vital roles they played in this charitable effort. Other major supporters included Graham Davis, Craig Curtis, John Roberts, Amy Davitt, and Freddie Austin.
