Automobiles and the Self Storage Industry Go Together Like…

Whether it is in our own personal relationships or in our business dealings it is not unusual to try and draw a connection between things. It’s all about being able to define something in a way that it fits in with other people, places, or things. This happens every day in our personal connections, as well as in the self storage industry.

When it comes to the self storage industry some of the first connections we think of are with moving companies, charities—but cars? Surprisingly yes!

For example, Metro Storage recently announced that it will be converting a property it had purchased in Minneapolis in to a state-of-the-art self storage facility. The property was a former Dodge care dealership.

“We’ve had great success in the Minneapolis market and are looking forward to launching our expansion into this market with the repurposing of this auto dealership into a state of the art, consumer friendly, self storage facility,” said Matthew Nagel, Chairman of Metro Storage LLC.

The company is looking to open the facility during the first quarter of 2015.

This isn’t the first time that a self storage facility has risen from the ashes of a former car dealership, and will likely not be the last. While they deal in entirely different products the two businesses want the same thing when it comes to picking out a location—location and visibility.

“This is a great acquisition for us,” Blair Nagel, CEO of Metro Storage LLC said of the property. “It’s in an outstanding location with tremendous visibility, and it will enable us to begin to leverage the Metro brand across the Minneapolis market.”

Flipping old dealerships is not the only connection the self storage industry has with cars. Many facilities love to host car shows. Shepherd Self Storage in Ohio recently hosted the Street Scene Car & Custom Bike Show.

They don’t do it just for the love of fine cars though. The purpose in hosting car shows is often two-fold; to aid a charity and publicity. Shepherd Self Storage benefitted the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley by handing out raffle tickets to those bringing donations. With admission to the show free people were encouraged to come by.

When they come by they get to check out the self storage facility as well as all of the great cars.
