The self storage industry is one that is constantly growing by leaps and bounds. In the United States alone there are over 50,000 self storage facilities. Another 10,000 exist outside of the U.S. and that number is growing all the time; so much in fact that other countries are starting to hold what they hope will an annual Self Storage Expo.
Jon Perrins of Steel Storage recently announced that the second annual Self Storage Expo Asia is going to be held in Hong Kong next year. On March 26 and 27 the Harbour View Hotel will host the event with hopes that it will further the growth of the industry in a part of the world that is known for being densely populated and lacking in space.
This is not the first time that Perrins has been responsible for starting up a similar gathering of business professionals in Europe. It started back around the turn of the millennium when he organized a self storage expo in the UK. Over the years the event grew and grew until it became the European Self Storage Conference that now attracts around 250 attendees.
Close to 140 people turned out for the first Asian Self Storage Expo last year and organizers are hopeful that number will grow this year with transactions involving self storage facilities now into the 100’s of millions of dollars .
“This inaugural event provided a great showcase of the opportunities in this emerging market. It was very interesting to hear the experiences of those who have made storage work in the more mature markets as pioneers of investment into this less mature market and the encouragement this has given to local investors to enter the sector,” said one attendee that came from the UK.
Asia and the UK are not the only locations outside of the United State that are holding Self Storage Expos. The industry has built up enough in South America that the first Latin American self storage expo is scheduled to be held on November 4 and 5.
“The first Latin American trade show and education expo in Brazil will benefit all members of LASSA as it will offer educational sessions aimed at the unique nature of our market, as well as the opportunity to learn from other operators in the region and to see firsthand the products and technologies developed specifically for our industry,” said Nancy Torres, President of the Latin American Self Storage Association.
