A-1 Self Storage recently sponsored a surfing team in the 19th Annual Luau & Longboard Invitational event that was held on August 19, 2012 at Scripps Beach, La Jolla in San Diego, California. All funds raised at the event went to the Moores UCSD Cancer Center.

The purpose of this event is several fold. It raises awareness and funds for cancer research that is done at the Moores Cancer Center. It provides funds for educational programs, outreach, and patient care.

Teams of four participated in the Longboard Invitational. Team A-1 Self Storage won the 1st place trophy. Team members include Kolton Gustafson, Devon Howard, Jock Sutherland (a legendary longboard surfer), Brian L. Caster, and Brian R. Caster.

“A-1 Self Storage is proud to support the UCSD Moores Cancer Center and compete in their Surf for Cure event,” said Brian Caster, President and CEO of A-1 Self Storage. “It was an honor for all of us on our team to surf with legendary longboard surfer, Jock Sutherland. Winning this year’s event was great; however, not as gratifying as helping to raise funds for cancer research.”

Surfing for a Cure was established in 1993. Since then, they have raised more than $5 million for cancer research. It is remarkable to note that the executive committee and all committee members are volunteers.

As part of the event, each year an artist is asked to donate a piece of art that represents the Luau & Longboard Invitational to be used on t-shirts, posters, and other promotional materials. All proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts also go to the Cancer Center. This year, Kevin Walsh was named event artist.

The Moores University of California at San Diego Cancer Center was established in 1979 and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the San Diego region.

The Center is in the forefront in the fight against cancer by in-depth researching, developing new therapies, and making those therapies available to cancer patients. In 2005, the Center moved into a new building that is on the east side of UC San Diego.

Headquartered in San Diego, A-1 Self Storage has over 42 self storage locations in throughout California. They are part of the Caster Companies portfolio. They have facilities in the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Diego, North, Los Angeles, and Orange counties.
