Holly Robinson

Holly Robinson (no, not Holly Robinson-Peete - the Autism advocate/actress/model/athlete's wife) works as a "staging expert" for a national real estate company, who has recently moved from a fast-paced metropolitan area to a slower-paced suburbia. In her spare time she keeps an online journal of the differences in these two worlds, and how she manages to keep a toe hold in each. Her topics often include "what you can live without" and "life's must-haves," - life simplification without sacrifice - which she has learned through her profession.

Remember the scene in Hamlet where two gravediggers argue whether or not Ophelia should be buried in a churchyard since her death looks like a suicide? Hamlet comes along and wonders about the skulls that they dig up to make room for a fresh grave. Hamlet then picks up a skull and the gravedigger says that it is the skull of Yorick. Whereupon Hamlet says, “Alas,...

SpareFoot Self Storage Finder had a clever idea at the beginning of this year. They decided to hold a battle of the bands – sort of. The battle was not carried out in person. The battle was held on YouTube. For the bands to participate, the band had to practice in a self storage unit. (The parents of band members are probably grateful that the bands practice in a...

Have you seen a vintage TV commercial about E.F. Hutton & Company? (E.F. Hutton & Co. was an American stock brokerage firm founded in 1904 by Edward and Franklin Hutton.) The commercial shows people at a dinner party. They are talking, silverware and dishes are clinking. A young professional says to his dinner companion that E.F. Hutton is his broker and immediately...

When people look back at the end of a year they like to see certain things. Did they do anything? Did they grow—physically and metaphorically? Did they just watch the world go by or were they actively trying to make their mark in it?  Does the future look any better for what they did or didn’t do?  The same questions could be asked for a business—self...

In my Twitter feed this morning, I learned that today is National Tooth Fairy Day. WTVY in Dothan, Alabama, did a little news story and told experiences about the tooth fairy that people shared with them. One person told how she took her grandmother’s false teeth and put them under her pillow in hopes to make lots of money from the tooth fairy. Her grandmother was...

When a birthday rolls around, people dream of the gifts they might receive.  Some of those dreams are fairly simple – a new technology gadget, something for the man-cave, or something new to wear. Bigger dreams might include a new car or a trip to a tropical island. What would it be like, though, to receive $10 million dollars? That’s what Chuck Gordon,...

In 2003, family, friends, and local investors opened Old Barn Self-Storage in Grass Valley, California. Things were looking good even though there was stiff competition locally. Then, the economic walls came tumbling down. Sometimes, nation-wide companies can more easily weather rough financial times than mom-and-pop self storage facilities. However, the Old Storage Barn...

Do you ever wonder why it is kind of hard to find Waldo? He is wearing that ridiculous hat and sweater after all. You’d think he would be easy to find. While the outfit is unique there is one important factor that is not—he is just another person in the picture. In a business like the self storage industry it can be easy to fall in to the same kind of rut,...
