3 Fall Do-it-yourself Crafts for Your Home

Now that summer is officially over, it’s time to take those fall decorations out of storage and spice up the house. But putting up the same burlap wreath and apple arrangement year after year can take some of the fun out of decorating. Add excitement and color back into this autumn season with these three, simple DIY fall décor ideas: leafy lantern jar; ombré pumpkin; and painted leaves. You’ll find a list of needed materials and instructions for each project below!

Leafy Lantern Jar

Leafy Lantern Jar

Materials

  • Mason Jars
  • Decorative Silk Leaves
  • Craft Glue
  • Tea Light Candles

Instructions

The number of leafy lantern jars you want to make will determine the quantity of supplies you’ll need. Typically, you’ll need five decorative silk leaves for every pint-sized mason jar. Begin by turning the leaves over to expose their backsides. Then apply a conservative amount of craft glue to one of the leaves and press it to the side of the mason jar. Hold in place for about 20 seconds. Repeat with each of the remaining leaves until the mason jar is completely wrapped. Play around with different combinations of leaf colors to create an arrangement specific to your desired look and feel.

Ombré Pumpkin

Ombre Pumpkin

Materials

  • Pumpkin
  • Craft Paint
    • 1 White
    • 2 Colors of Your Choice
  • Foam Paint Brush
  • Damp Cotton Balls

Instructions

For this DIY project, you may choose to use a real or fake pumpkin. But you’ll obviously want to go with the artificial one if you want your pumpkin to last longer than just one season. Start by painting your entire pumpkin, except for the stem, white. Once dry, paint the darker of the two other colors of your choice from the bottom to about two-thirds of the way up. Then paint the lighter color on just the middle section of the pumpkin, leaving the white base visible at the top. Lastly, dampen the cotton balls with water and blend the three colors by lightly dabbing along the color edges. Let dry and you’re ready to add it to your hallway table.

Painted Leaves

Painted Leaves

Materials

  • Decorative Silk Leaves
  • Craft Paint (3-6 colors)
  • Paint Brushes

Instructions

Let your creativity run wild with this one. Select 3-6 different colors of craft paint that resemble both the warm and cool colors seen during the fall season. We selected a nice gold, orange, white, light green, aqua blue, and pastel lavender. Once you have your colors ready, cover your crafting surface with cloth or newspaper. Next, freely paint the different sections of each leaf or use the edge of some printer paper to make crisp, straight lines. Again, let your creativity flow. Get your children, grandchildren, or whole family involved as this is an easy craft everyone can have fun participating in.
