Whether you’re staging your home to sell or simply want to add some style to it, this DIY throw pillow is a great option. For the experienced sewer, it’s a quick and easy way to save some money and add personal flair to your home. For beginners, it’s still a good starting sewing project – it just may take you a little more time for the first pillow or two. A list of needed materials and step-by-step instructions are below!
- Chalk pen
- Pillow form (standard)
- Sewing machine
- Iron and ironing board
- Yard stick
- Seam gauge
1. Measure and Cut Pillow Front
Before you begin, iron the fabric to work out all the kinks and make it easier to measure and cut. Once ironed, measure and cut out a square the same size as your pillow. In this case, we used an 18×18 inch pillow form.
2. Measure and Cut Back Pieces (2)
Now, cut two pieces for the backside of the pillow. These will each need to be the same width as the front side, but half the height plus four inches. For example, the width of our back pieces is 18 inches and the height is 13 inches (i.e. 9 + 4 = 13). The four extra inches on each piece allows a little overlap when they’re sewn together, which will hide the pillow once inserted.
3. Fold, Press and Hem Back Edges
Take one of the back pieces and fold it down ½ inch along one of the long sides. Iron that ½-inch fold to create a nice crease in the fabric. Then, fold one more time on the same side (another ½ inch) and press again with the iron. Insert pins to help keep the folds in place and hem using a sewing machine. Repeat this process with the second back piece of the pillow.
4. Align Front and Back Pieces
Placing the front piece “right” side up (the side with the print), align the two back pieces on top with the “right” sides down and hemmed edges towards the middle (pillow should look inside out). Pin and sew all edges with a ½-inch seam allowance.
5. Cut Corners, Turn Inside Out and Insert Pillow Form
Cut corners diagonally and outside of the hem as shown in the image above. Then flip the pillow inside out and insert the pillow form. All that’s left to do is fluff, place and enjoy!
