Kitchen Storage Ideas: DIY Organization and Storage Tips!

When you’re cooking in your kitchen, the last thing you want to worry about is where a specific ingredient is tucked away in your cabinets or where a certain utensil is buried in your drawers. In this guide to DIY kitchen organization, we share quick ideas you can use to declutter your kitchen and make items easier to find!

Add Shelves for More Storage Space

Especially if you don’t have a lot of counter or cabinet space available at home, shelves can be a great space saver. Add shelves wherever you have open wall space to keep items up and out of the way. For additional functionality, you can include hooks beneath the shelves to hang coffee cups, towels, or utensils.

Organize Your Pantry with Baskets

Need better pantry organization? Try using baskets to store canned goods, chip bags, and more. Be sure to label what’s in the basket to help you find what you need faster. You can also put baskets on rollers so you can pull them out quicker, too.

Declutter Your Refrigerator with Bins

Similar to using baskets in your pantry, use clear bins with labels to store items in your refrigerator. This is especially helpful with condiments kept in jars or bottles, which can crowd your fridge and make it harder to find things.

Ditch Boxes for Labeled Containers

Boxes can take up a lot of usable space in a small pantry, cabinet, or on a shelf. Pull food, ingredients, and spices out of their original packaging and put them in clear containers that you can label.

Designate a Spice Rack Drawer

Prefer to keep your spices in easy-to-reach places? A great idea is to repurpose a drawer with an inexpensive spice rack insert to organize your spices and provide fast access to different bottles and jars.

Let's talk kitchen organization. Who has a built in spice rack? What kind do you have and do you like it? We have had the pull out spice racks in a tall cabinet, but I have to say, so far…this is my favorite design for spices. All easy to get to, none hidden, and not down too low or too high….and placed right next to the stove. I think the only change I would make is to have two of these!! What's worked for you…or what do you wish you had?? As a custom home builder it's important to hear from our clients on what has worked for them in the past…and what has not. . . . #rangecustomhomes #customcabinets #customhome #mnbuilder #mnhomes #mnrealestate #minnesota #newhome #kitchendesign #kitchenorganization #spicerack #orginization #homedesign #interiordesignideas #kitchen

Use Baskets for Fruit & Veggies on Your Counter

Keeping loose fruits and vegetables on your counter can take up valuable work space in your kitchen. Use baskets to keep them in a convenient spot while also preventing them from rolling around.

Separate Tupperware with Baskets

Kitchen drawers and cabinets can quickly overflow with food storage containers. A simple solution for keeping these often unruly items contained is to store them in baskets. Plus, the baskets make it easier to find matching lids and containers!

Organize Kitchen Utensils in Drawers

Having to rummage through utensils is frustrating when every kitchen tool you own is in one, large drawer. Without breaking the bank, you can clean up even the most chaotic kitchen drawer with drawer organizers. These mini-bins keep your drawers in order so that finding what you need is simple and fast.

Use Mason Jars to Organize Cooking Utensils

If you don’t have a lot of drawer space for your utensils, mason jars are a budget-friendly solution! Within a large jar – or several of them – you can fit spatulas, tongs, and whatever other utensils you need handy, making them quicker to grab off the counter. And you can decorate the jars to match your personal style or home decor.

Organize Pots & Pans Lids on the Cabinet Door

Pots and pans can take up a lot of room in cabinets, and when you add lids to the mix, it can be difficult to manage. If you need a better solution for how to organize pots and pans, move lids to the cabinet door with mounted hangers. This allows you to keep lids and pans together but in a more manageable way.

Declutter the Space Under Your Kitchen Sink

The storage space under your kitchen sink is a great place to store cleaning supplies, sponges, trash bags, and more. Adding drawers or two-tiered bins and grouping together like supplies can keep this spot from being a mess.

Move Cleaning Supplies to a Higher Cabinet

If you’d rather keep the space under your kitchen sink clear of cleaning supplies because you have small children who could get into the cabinet, move them to a higher cabinet. You may even find doing so makes storage easier because drains and garbage disposals won’t be in the way!

Maximize Drawer Space by Folding Towels Smaller

Even if you don’t have a lot of kitchen towels, they can still take up a lot of space! If your towel drawer is overflowing and messy, it may be time to try folding them vertically instead.

Before and after a simple folding job 👏 The one on the left doesn't look so bad, right? But I'll tell you, you'll only use about five towels when you store your towels like this. . When folded and stored vertically, you can pick which towel you want to use and you'll cycle through them because the freshly laundered ones won't always go back on top. . This was a quick fix, and I also moved a few old, worn out towels to my rag pile in the process. . Tackle the Junk Drawer Once and For All

Everybody has a “junk drawer” in the kitchen where they throw tools, batteries, tape, pens, phone chargers, and other items that don’t seem to have a home. Rather than let the junk drawer overflow, organizers and separators are a simple idea to utilize to keep items visible and easy to grab!
