Hollywood versus Self Storage

If you’re gifted to live in this great country, America, there are two or three things you know for sure. The “golden arches” are more than just the entrance to heaven. “Football” has a lot more to do with helmets and pads, than feet. And, the coup-de-grace of knowledge: Hollywood is the sexiest industry on earth.

Nothing could possibly challenge the glitz, the glam, the gumption…Hollywood trumps it all.

Or does it?

Let’s say for one moment that maybe, just maybe, there is an industry in competition with Hollywood. And, let’s say this industry is just a tad bit more practical…maybe even an industry the common person could use.

Any guesses?

Self storage. Mini storage. The closet away from home. Call it what it you may, the self-storage industry is packing a punch.

Okay, okay. Hold on now, you’re thinking. This is getting ridiculous.

We’ll give it to you. Self storage may not compete with Hollywood’s sexiness or scandals (although StorageWars would beg to differ). But the one thing it does have on Hollywood: cold, hard cash.

According to Slate magazine, the self-storage industry has officially surpassed Hollywood in revenue.

This may not be a surprise, if you know a thing or two about self storage. According to the Self Storage Association, their industry has been one of the fastest growing sectors of the US commercial real estate industry for the past 38 years. There are more than 50,000 self-storage facilities in the US alone, equaling an astounding 2.3 billion square feet of space.

That’s all nice. But, what does this say about Americans? Have we forgotten entirely where we come from?

We suppose that’s yet to be seen.

In the meantime, may we suggest you jump on the bandwagon and forgo those summer blockbusters in lieu of cleaning out your attic.
