Storing Your Vehicle During the Home Selling Process

In a competitive sellers’ market, excellent home “staging” (arranging and prepping your home so that it appeals to buyers) is crucial. While it’s true that a lived-in look enhances your chance of a sale, having too much stuff, or the wrong stuff, can work against home sellers.

Storing Your Vehicle During the Home Selling ProcessWhile many sellers rent storage space to reduce clutter in their home while it’s for sale, many don’t think to store their vehicles. This is unfortunate, because storing unneeded vehicles, including boats, second cars, RVs and snowmobiles, may be a good strategy for getting your home sold.

Here’s why:

  • Vehicles take up a lot of space. This can make your garage or driveway look crowded. Since many home buyers want as much space as they can get for their money, removing one or more vehicles from your property creates the illusion of more room for your home’s new owner.
  • If your vehicles aren’t in great shape, they can make your property look shabby. This can turn-off potential buyers or encourage low-ball bids.
  • Parking in front of your home can make your place less visible to potential buyers.

Types of Vehicle Storage

Fortunately, many storage facilities offer vehicle storage services. Depending on the facility, your options may include:

  • Outdoor storage: This is essentially a large parking lot. Rent a spot and park your vehicle for as long as you wish. This is often the most cost effective option and a good choice if you live in a temperate climate.
  • Indoor storage: If you want a bit more security, choose indoor storage for your vehicle. Indoor storage facilities for vehicles are like parking garages, protecting your car or boat against the elements and reducing the risk of vandalism.
  • Drive-in storage units: If you plan to store items other than your vehicle, look into drive-in storage units. These are large, garage-like storage units that you can use to store your car and your belongings. These units offer a great deal of protection and security for your vehicle(s) and may prove cost-effective if you have a lot of items that you need to store while your home is on the market.

Things to Ask About

Before choosing a storage facility, contact the manager and ask about security and accessibility issues:

  • Find out what kind of security the facility offers. Are there cameras and alarms? What about security guards? Is the security staff on premises 24/7?
  • Ask about access: You may need or want to use your vehicle during the home sale process. Some facilities offer 24/7 access. Others restrict access hours.
  • Identify public transit options in the area. If you’ve stored your car, or the car belonging to a family member, being able to get to the storage facility is important. Check public transit maps to see if you can get to the storage unit easily.
